What is the Average Dream?

June 30, 2022

No one ever really asks the question “What is an average dream?” As someone who interprets dreams, it’s not uncommon for me to get calls or texts from friends and family telling me all about a “weird dream” they had. Truthfully, I don’t mind it at all because I find them incredibly interesting, and because each person is so unique, so are their dreams. While there are many different types of dreams, from nightmares to lucid dreams. I wanted to take some time to talk to you all about the average dream, what it is, what is their purpose and why they are so fascinating, because while the others have all these bells n whistles, the average dream is just as cool but I feel like it these types of dreams don’t get the recognition they deserve.

What is the Average Dream?
The average dream, which is the most common dream, is basically a dream in its simplest form. There’s no astral travelling, there are no predictions, there’s nothing that will wake you up in the middle of the night with your heart racing. In other words, no perks, no oomph! They are the dreams that you either forget when you wake up, or you end up just keeping to yourself because they didn’t really have a “wow” factor. Average dreams usually come across as recaps of your day.

Think of it as sort of like a highlight reel, but instead of highlighting the parts we would think of as important or noteworthy, the highlighted events seem to be randomly chosen and altered in one way or another.

What is the Purpose of the Average Dream?
Many people ignore these dreams because well, like I mentioned before, you forget it when you wake up, or nothing really interesting happened in the dream that would make you think anything of it. The truth is these dreams are basically a conversation that your subconscious has with your unconscious mind. You see, the subconscious mind doesn’t like back and forth conversations, it likes to be the one talking, while you do the listening. The only time that is guaranteed you will be the one listening, is when you’re sleeping. So it won’t talk to you while you’re awake because that’s not ideal for it. Instead it blabs on and on all night long and doesn’t actually shut up. It doesn’t talk the way you and I would either, obviously. It has no voice. So basically, it’s purpose is to replay those daily events, but in it’s own way. However it thinks things should have gone, and it has quite an imagination!

Why the Average Dream is so Fascinating
The random events that show up in your highlight reel I mentioned above, they are actually not random at all.  Your subconscious mind has specifically chosen these moments in your day for a reason. Have you ever had a moment during the day where a situation happened, and the way you responded to the situation made you cringe? For the rest of the day, or if you’re like me the next few weeks, you keep replaying that particular moment in your mind. Continuously changing your response to any of the thousand things you could have said or done that would have been far less cringy.
Your subconscious mind does exactly the same thing. It replays all the moments that it deemed could have gone differently, whether you are consciously aware of them or not.
Now, symbolism is very heavy in the dream world and no matter what type of dream you are having, symbolism will almost always have a place. In an average dream that symbolism sometimes comes into play by replacing what actually happened, with what your subconscious thinks should have happened. How your subconscious thinks you should have handled it, and since your subconscious is technically you, these average dreams are often a reflection of how you wish the situation had been handled. Maybe you wish you told your boss off for treating you like crap and you’ve had enough, but you’re too afraid to lose your job so you just continue to take his/her crap. In your dream maybe his or her car is on fire, because you wish they would have gotten fired for talking to you that way.

Other dreams are really cool too, don’t get me wrong, but the average dream is like getting a different perspective on your days events. I wanted to write a post about them and give them a little shout out. I hope you enjoyed this post. If you did let me know in the comments, and I will write up more on this topic!
Until next time!
